Copenhagen is the home of the Carlberg Brewery and if Carlsberg did music exhibitions they would probably be like WOMEX 2009. This World Music Expo is a much sought after event attended by delegates, agents, artists, promoters and festival organisers from all over the world.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend this year's event thanks to UK Trading Industry. Once the tourist bus tour was complete and I had found the Little Mermaid, it was time to head over to the Bella Centre. This was the location of the Trade Fair and day-time events.
Day two gave me a productive start with breakfast meetings with representatives in the Copenhagen Plaza Hotel. With business cards at the ready I headed over to the Bella Centre.
My venture now is to ensure that traditional Irish music is represented at events like WOMEX.
The rest of my four day visit was taken up with attending the conference, meeting and greeting and networking with other delegates with plenty of "and what do you do?" type questions. At night and until the early hours I was able to see and hear an incredible variety of showcase events at the exhibition theatre, with professional music acts from around the globe.
WOMEX was a brilliant occasion to which I will return next year with the Reel Note Ceili Band.
I met many of the other delegates from Birmingham and the West Midlands representing many different areas and genres within the musical community. I soon began to realise there was a big gap in the WOMEX field for traditional Irish music... enter Katie and the Reel Note Ceili Band!
In the words of BBC Radio 3 presenter Lucy Duran "We need to celebrate the music diaspora: traditional music in contemporary life..."
